Across the vast waters of Southeast Asia, thousands of oil tankers shuttle back and forth, shouldering the vital task of energy transportation. For shipowners and captains, the reliability of deck machinery directly impacts operational efficiency and safety. Especially during supply or cargo lifting operations in narrow waterways, even minor instability in equipment can lead to irreversible losses.

In 2024, we received an urgent request from a client in urgent need of a marine crane (30 tons, 24 meters) capable of withstanding high-humidity, high-salt spray environments while delivering precise operations. Installed on oil tankers, it would be used for material hoisting and transfer.

The client's core requirement was clear:

Independent Design: 30-Ton Lifting Capacity, 4–24m Working Radius

 

Trusting in our capabilities, our R&D team conducted an in-depth analysis of three unique pain points specific to oil tankers:

  • Space Constraints: Compact deck layout with limited available space.
  • Energy Consumption & Explosion Protection: Extremely high electrical safety requirements, coupled with the need for reduced energy consumption during long offshore operations.
  • Corrosive Environment: High temperatures, humidity, and salt spray pose a fatal threat to hydraulic systems and steel structures.

 

To address these challenges, we launched the independent design30Ton 424m Electric-Hydraulic Fixed Boom Marine Crane for Southeast Asia Oil Tankers ABS Certified Application Case project for the 30Ton Electric-Hydraulic Fixed Boom Marine Crane:

 

  • Structural Optimization: Topology optimization of the fixed boom and base using finite element analysis (FEA). While maintaining the 30ton rated lifting capacity, the base dimensions were refined to perfectly fit the oil tanker's deck layout.

 

  • Power Core: An electric-hydraulic drive system was selected, providing superior overload protection and smooth inching performance-critical for precise cargo alignment amid the vessel's motion at sea.

 

  • Corrosion Protection Barrier: All structural components are coated with premium epoxy primer and polyurethane topcoat. Key hinge points adopt stainless steel, galvanizing, or sealing treatments, with a designed service life of over 25 years. Electrical components such as motors are sealed inside the tower or base.

Preliminary Stage: ABS Drawing Review

 

For marine lifting equipment, ABS certification is not only a "certificate of identity" but also a guarantee of quality.

From the marine crane drawing review to pre-delivery testing, every communication with ABS surveyors throughout the manufacturing process reflects our commitment to product integrity.

 

We understood that ABS certification requires comprehensive performance parameters and technical solutions. Leveraging our advanced computer-aided design (CAD) system and the collaboration of professional mechanical and electrical engineers, we submitted complete calculations and drawings to ABS.

 

Intermediate Stage: ABS Structural & Material Testing

 

  • Material Verification: Material certificates were provided for primary load-30Ton 424m Electric-Hydraulic Fixed Boom Marine Crane for Southeast Asia Oil Tankers ABS Certified Application Casebearing components (boom, base, slewing bearing, etc.). Key welds underwent non-destructive testing (NDT), including UT/RT/MT/PT, to ensure freedom from cracks, lack of fusion, and other defects.

 

  • Strength Verification: Finite element analysis was performed in accordance with ABS rules to validate structural strength and stiffness under rated and extreme conditions (e.g., storms, collisions).

- Allowable tensile/compressive stress shall be 0.6–0.7 times the yield strength;

- Under proof load (125% SWL), structural stress shall not exceed 90% of the material yield strength, with no permanent deformation, cracks, or local instability permitted.

- Stabilizing moment ≥ 1.3 × overturning moment.

 

  • Fatigue Life: High-frequency loaded parts and components were evaluated for fatigue life per ABS fatigue design criteria, based on a design cycle count (typically ≥ 10⁶ cycles), with stress amplitudes meeting S-N curve requirements.

Final Stage: On-Site Static & Dynamic Crane Testing

 

Witnessed by ABS surveyors, the purchaser, and our engineers, static and30Ton 424m Electric-Hydraulic Fixed Boom Marine Crane for Southeast Asia Oil Tankers ABS Certified Application Case dynamic tests were conducted at the factory's open-air test yard:

  • Normal operation of the crane under hook no-load conditions.
  • Normal operation without deformation during dynamic testing at 30ton rated load.
  • Normal operation without deformation during dynamic testing at 33ton load.
  • Normal operation during dynamic testing at 37.5ton load, with high-precision instruments recording zero deformation.
  • Continuous 2-hour no-load and rated-load operation tests confirmed stable hydraulic system temperature rise and noise levels below 78 dB.

 

Ultimately, the ABS surveyor signed off, and the fixed boom marine crane successfully completed ABS verification.

After a one-month waiting period, we formally received the ABS Product Certificate.
