What is a 20FT Semi-Automatic Mechanical Container Spreader?
A 20FT semi-automatic mechanical container spreader is a specialized lifting device designed to handle ISO standard 20FT containers. It combines automatic functions with manual assistance.
The spreader can automatically lock and unlock twistlocks, and can be equipped with electric or hydraulic systems to realize functions such as rotation and telescoping. Meanwhile, the operator controls the whole working process through a control panel or remote control.
The spreader's mainframe is made of high-strength steel(such as Q345B, with sufficient strength and rigidity to withstand the weight of the container and various forces during operation.).
The twistlocks are forged from high-quality steel with a yield strength not less than 450 MPa, such as 42CrMo.

Our 20ft semi-automatic mechanical container spreader has a rated lifting capacity of generally 25–35 tons, with a dead weight of 1.8–2.1 tons.

Basic Function
The container spreader connects to the crane hook via the top lifting ring. Powered by the hoisting mechanism's up-and-down movement, it drives the linkage mechanism, which rotates the twist-lock mechanism ±90° to achieve locking and unlocking.
Linkage Mechanism
A triangular drive plate is installed in the linkage. The crane hook movement drives the guide block via springs and cables, making the triangular plate rotate ±90°. Shims under the stop block adjust the height to ensure the correct locking angle.
Twist-lock Mechanism
When landing on the container, four corner lifting rods float (mechanical interlock). The triangular plate rotates ±90°, driving the connecting rod, rotating arm, and twist-lock shaft to complete locking/unlocking.

Floating Twist-lock Support
The four twistlocks use suspended spherical supports, allowing floating movement within a certain range. This puts only pure tension on the twist-locks during lifting, eases insertion into container corner castings, and allows handling slightly deformed containers.
Locking Indication
The drive linkage actuates a pointer to show the lock status. The indication must match the twist-lock action. A highly visible or reflective lock indicator plate is required for low-light conditions.
Guide Plate Device
Movable steel guide plates assist the operator in positioning. Each spreader is equipped with 3 steel guide plates, thickness ≥3 cm, length ≥0.9 m, with anti-falling protection and free up-down movement.
Handling & Wire Rope Storage
The spreader is designed with forklift pockets (e.g., 150×300 mm) for easy transportation. A wire rope fixing and storage device is provided to prevent damage during transit.





Quality Assurance of Our Spreaders
From receiving the container spreader order to final delivery, we monitor every step of production, focusing on both appearance and performance:
- The cutting surfaces of structural parts shall be no less than Grade 2 as specified in GB/T 3123.
- Welding electrodes, wires and fluxes shall comply with GB/T 5117 and GB/T 5118, and be compatible with the materials of the welded structural parts.
- The groove types of welds shall comply with GB/T 985.1 and GB/T 985.2.
- The quality of butt welds on load-bearing structural parts shall be no less than Grade I in GB/T 11345 and Grade II in GB/T 3323.
- Welded joints and weld dimensions shall conform to GB/T 985.1 and JB/T 7949. All welds shall be free from defects such as incomplete welding, burn-through, cracks, incomplete penetration, overlap, undercut, and slag inclusions that affect performance and appearance.
- After welding, the bending and warping of the frame shall not exceed 1.5% of the center distance between twist-locks in the length and width directions of the spreader.
