Double Rope Mechanical Grab

Double Rope Mechanical Grab

The Double Rope Mechanical Grab is designed for double‑drum cranes. It operates with two ropes: one supporting rope and one closing rope, completing grabbing, lifting and discharging in one continuous cycle. Free of hydraulics and electric components, it delivers reliable performance even in dusty and humid conditions. Its tight‑fitting jaw enables effective material retention, and worn liner plates can be replaced individually. Suitable for coal, ore, sand‑aggregate and grain. Custom sizes are available to match your crane and handled materials.

Description

What is a Double Rope Mechanical Grab?

Our double rope mechanical grab consists of two wire ropes, a well‑proven pulley system, and grab buckets. It features no other power required, so it will not malfunction in humid or dusty conditions.

If your operation handles coal, ore, sand, grain, or other bulk materials, you may well know: the bottleneck is often not the crane, but the lifting attachment. The grab is purpose‑built for exactly this task - higher payload retention, less material spillage, and greater stability.

We can customize special grabs working load ranges from 10 t to 80 t. Structural certification complies with FEM 9.511 M8 class, and safety compliance meets EN 13155 Class II.

How Does It Work?

The working principle of the double rope mechanical grab is straightforward - and that is exactly its advantage.

This grab requires the crane to be equipped with two independent hoisting drums. One rope (supporting rope) connects to the upper beam of the grab and holds it in working position. The other rope (closing rope) runs through the pulley block between the upper and lower beams to control the opening and closing of the grab.

Sequence of operation:

  • Positioning: Both ropes lower simultaneously, and the grab lands on the material pile in open condition.
  • Digging & Grabbing: The closing rope is tensioned. The jaws rotate inwards to dig into the material. The reduced centre‑to‑centre distance of pulleys forces the jaws to close.
  • Lifting: Both ropes hoist upwards together. The loaded grab travels to the discharge point.
  • Discharging: The supporting rope remains taut while the closing rope is slackened. The lower beam opens the jaws by its own weight to release materials.

This completes one full operating cycle of the grabs. When paired with well‑matched equipment, a full cycle can be finished in as fast as around 6 seconds, depending on grab capacity.

Double Rope Mechanical Grab

Built for High‑Intensity Working Conditions

Grabs operate daily amid dust, grit, moisture, and impact. Our double rope mechanical grabs are engineered specifically for these harsh conditions.

Intermeshing Jaw Closure - not merely closed, but sealed. The jaw profiles overlap one another to prevent fine‑material spillage during lifting. Our tests demonstrate a filling rate up to 90 %, with material loss below 2 % throughout transportation.

Replaceable Wear Liners - high‑stress zones inside the jaws are protected by bolt‑on liners. When liners wear out, only the liners need replacing instead of the entire grab body. This feature alone triples the major‑overhaul interval.

Sealed Hinge Points - grease channels lead to every pin and bush. Daily visual inspection plus weekly lubrication covers all routine maintenance.

Grab Working Condition Grade & Material Selection

Core principle: Not every application requires the heaviest‑duty configuration. Match grab grade to actual material to balance upfront cost and service life.

Duty Grade Typical Materials Structural Steel Wear Component Material Key Characteristics
Standard Duty Grain, sand, light aggregates Q235B / Q355B NM400 (partial lining) Low abrasion, cost‑optimized
Heavy‑Enhanced Duty Coal, mineral fines Q355B NM400 (contact‑surface cladding) Moderate abrasion, local wear protection
Heavy‑Duty Iron ore, heavy minerals Q355B / Q690 NM450 High‑density load, stress‑point reinforcement
Extra‑Heavy‑Duty Lump hard ore, severe impact‑abrasion Q690 NM500 / Hardox 450‑500 Full multi‑layer reinforcement, complete wear coverage
