Cargo Characteristics Matching: Marine Crane Selection for Different Material Handling

The selection of offshore cranes for material handling should be based on the physical properties of the cargo, its morphological characteristics, and the operating environment. A clear understanding of the cargo properties and the working environment is crucial for selecting offshore cranes.

Types of container cranes

Types of container cranes: Slewing cranes are more suitable among ship cranes. They can rotate horizontally, have a wide range of operations, and flexibly lift containers in and out of the cabin and place them on the deck. In addition, shore container cranes in some large ports also belong to marine cranes, which can load and unload containers efficiently and quickly.

Lifting capacity: It should be selected according to the specifications and weight of the container. Generally, a 20-foot container weighs about 20 tons, and a 40-foot container weighs about 30 tons, so the container crane's lifting capacity should be above the corresponding tonnage, and there should be a certain safety margin.

Working radius: When a ship is docked at the port, the marine crane must be able to cover all the ship's cabins and the operating area at the front of the wharf. For example, some large container ships have wider cabins, so the marine crane needs to have a larger working radius to complete the loading and unloading operations.

Bulk cargo crane type

Bulk cargo crane type: You can choose a marine crane equipped with a grab bucket, such as a floating crane. The floating crane has strong mobility and can load and unload bulk cargo at different locations. Different types of grab buckets can be selected according to the characteristics of the bulk cargo, such as plum grab buckets, shell grab buckets, etc.

Lifting capacity: Bulk cargoes have different densities and weights. For bulk cargoes with lower density, such as coal and grain, the marine crane's lifting capacity can be selected based on the ship's loading capacity and loading and unloading efficiency requirements, whereas for bulk cargoes with higher density, such as ore, a marine cranewith a larger lifting capacity is required to ensure that the grab bucket filled with bulk cargo can be lifted.

Working radius: If a bulk carrier is being loaded and unloaded at a port, the marine crane's working radius needs to be able to cover the cargo hold area of the ship; if bulk cargo is being transshipped at sea, the appropriate working radius must be determined based on the operating scenario and the layout of the boat.

Types of cranes for heavy cargo

Types of marine cranes for heavy cargo: truss base marine cranes or heavy-duty cranes are more suitable. Truss base marine cranes have a strong structure, good stability, and can withstand large loads; heavy-duty cranes have strong lifting capacity and can meet the needs of lifting heavy cargo.

Lifting capacity: Heavy cargo, such as large machinery and equipment, large parts of ships, etc., can weigh tens or even hundreds of tons. Therefore, it is necessary to choose a marine crane with a lifting capacity that matches it and consider the distribution of the cargo's center of gravity and the balance during the lifting process.

Working radius: Determined according to the lifting range of heavy cargo. If the ship parts are lifted in the shipyard, the working radius should be able to cover the production area and the ship construction location; if the equipment installation and other operations are carried out at sea, the appropriate working radius should be determined according to the relative position of the working platform and the ship.

Types of liquid cargo cranes

Types of liquid cargo cranes: Conventional marine cranes are generally not used directly to transport liquid cargo. Instead, special liquid cargo loading and unloading equipment, such as cargo pumps and oil transfer arms of liquid cargo ships, is used. However, cranes may be used in some special cases, such as when lifting or installing liquid cargo tanks. In this case, electric cranes with good stability and high precision can be selected to facilitate precise control of the lifting process.

Lifting capacity: Select according to the weight and volume of the liquid tank. A tank filled with liquid has a low center of gravity but a significant weight, so an offshore crane with sufficient lifting capacity is required to lift it safely.

Working radius: It must meet the requirements of the liquid tank's installation position on the ship and the docking with the onshore loading and unloading facilities. For example, at the liquid cargo terminal, the offshore crane must accurately lift the fluid tank to the designated loading and unloading position, requiring its working radius to cover the area.
