Lubrication requirements and operation specifications for different lubrication points of marine cranes

Lubrication is crucial for the efficient and stable operation of marine cranes. Different lubrication points have specific requirements and operational specifications based on their working environments and stress conditions.

Boom Hinges

  • Lubrication Requirements: Extreme-pressure lithium-based grease is required, which has good extreme pressure and wear resistance to withstand the enormous pressure when the offshore crane's boom rotates. The grease's dropping point should not be lower than 160°C to adapt to the possible high temperatures in marine operations.

  • Operational Specifications: Check the lubrication condition before each operation. Add grease every 50 working hours. When adding, do it slowly and evenly until new grease is squeezed out from the hinge point to ensure sufficient lubrication. Wipe off excess grease after adding to prevent dust and seawater contamination.

Slewing Rings

  • Lubrication Requirements: High-viscosity gear grease should be selected, which has excellent adhesion and water resistance, and can form a stable oil film on the contact surface between the slewing ring and the base to reduce wear.

  • Operational Specifications: Check the lubrication condition weekly and thoroughly lubricate every 200 hours. When adding grease, rotate the slewing ring to ensure the grease is evenly distributed on the entire raceway. The amount should be enough to fill the gap between the raceway and the rolling elements. Shorten the lubrication cycle appropriately when operating in severe sea conditions.

Winch Drum Bearings

  • Lubrication Requirements: Water-resistant grease is adopted, which can effectively resist seawater erosion, has good low-temperature performance, and can maintain fluidity at -30°C.

  • Operational Specifications: Add grease every 100 working hours. Clean up debris and seawater around the bearings before adding. Inject grease through the grease nipple until it overflows from the bearing gaps to ensure sufficient lubrication. If the bearing is soaked in seawater after operation, re-add grease in time.

Hydraulic System

  • Lubrication Requirements: Special anti-wear hydraulic oil is used, with a viscosity index of not less than 140, good oxidation resistance, and anti-emulsification performance, which can form a tough oil film on the surface of hydraulic components to reduce wear and leakage. The cleanliness level of the hydraulic oil must reach NAS 8 or higher.

  • Operational Specifications: Regularly check the oil level and quality of the hydraulic oil. The oil level should be kept between 1/2 and 3/4 of the tank scale. If the oil is emulsified, discolored, or contains impurities, replace it in time. When replacing hydraulic oil, thoroughly clean the tank and oil filter. The new oil must be filtered before adding. Replace the hydraulic oil filter element every 500 hours and the hydraulic oil every 2000 hours.

Steel Wire Ropes

  • Lubrication Requirements: Special grease for steel wire ropes is used. It has good permeability and can penetrate the space between the internal wires of the steel wire rope to lubricate and prevent rust. It also has specific adhesion and is not easily washed away by seawater.

  • Operational Specifications: New steel wire ropes must be fully lubricated before use. Check the lubrication condition every 100 working hours. When the steel wire rope surface is dry or shows signs of rust, apply grease in time. When applying the grease, use a brush to evenly apply it to the steel wire rope and repeatedly bend it to ensure the grease fully penetrates the interior.

During lubrication operations, operators must wear protective gloves and goggles to prevent grease from contacting the skin and eyes. Meanwhile, lubrication records should be kept for traceability and management, including the lubrication time, type of grease, and filling amount of each lubrication point. In addition, grease and hydraulic oil should be stored in well-sealed containers to avoid mixing with impurities and seawater, which may affect the lubrication effect.
